Maimane Proposes Alternatives to VAT Increase in Budget Discussions with ANC

Build One South Africa (BOSA) leader Mmusi Maimane is optimistic that political parties can reach a “workable solution” regarding the national budget following a scheduled meeting with the African National Congress (ANC). He plans to present alternatives to the proposed 0.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) increase, aiming to generate approximately R120 billion in revenue without raising VAT.

Among the proposals is a 6% “sin tax” on online gambling and sports betting, projected to contribute around R85 billion in the medium term. Maimane emphasized the collective desire among parties to find viable solutions, stating, “There is an appetite across all parties to find workable solutions.”

Despite the VAT increase set to take effect on 1 May 2025, smaller parties like BOSA and ActionSA remain hopeful that alternative measures can prevent its implementation
