The 28 year old Renaldo Leaner joined the club only a couple of months ago. He is now widely expected to replace captain and first choice goalkeeper Brandon Petersen in the starting lineup.
Petersen has been ruled out for up to six weeks after suffering a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee during Tuesday morning’s training session.
For Leaner, Sunday’s Betway Premiership clash against Lamontville Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium could therefore be the beginning of a career changing spell.
DOES RENALDO LEANER HAVE THE NUMBERS?
Leaner arrives with 62 senior club appearances, 21 clean sheets, three Bafana Bafana caps and a standout record of producing under pressure.
The Elsies River native came through the Ajax Cape Town academy before gaining senior experience with Maritzburg United and Sekhukhune United.
His 2022/23 campaign with Maritzburg United produced six clean sheets in 16 appearances, while his overall senior club record stands at 21 clean sheets and 59 goals conceded in 62 appearances.
One of his most impressive performances came against Orlando Pirates while playing for Sekhukhune United.
Leaner made five decisive saves in that match, with four coming from inside the box. He also recorded 13 recoveries and claimed two high balls as he secured a memorable clean sheet.
His performances have earned him a 7.4 average FotMob rating during his active top flight minutes.
WHAT MAKES LEANER DIFFERENT?
The goalkeeper’s domestic form eventually led to international recognition with Bafana Bafana.
Leaner has three caps for South Africa and kept two clean sheets in his first three international matches. He made his debut against Tanzania and also featured against Panama.
Away from football, Leaner has an impressive academic background. He holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of the Western Cape, a Sports Psychology qualification from UNISA and a Higher Certificate in Sports Sciences from Tuks.
CAN HE HANDLE THE KAIZER CHIEFS PRESSURE?
Replacing Petersen means stepping into one of the most scrutinised positions in South African football.
Kaizer Chiefs have previously relied on legendary goalkeepers including Brian Baloyi, Rowen Fernandez and Itumeleng Khune. Khune in particular set an exceptional standard with his shot stopping and distribution.
Leaner will now have to handle those expectations when he faces Golden Arrows, the same opponents who ended Kaizer Chiefs’ MTN8 campaign earlier this season with Petersen in goal.
COULD THIS BE HIS BIG BREAK?
Leaner will need to command his penalty area, organise the defence and distribute accurately while making the crucial saves at Mbombela Stadium.
A strong run could turn a six week injury replacement role into something far more significant for Leaner at Kaizer Chiefs. He has already played at top flight level, represented Bafana Bafana and delivered against major opposition.
Now, he has the opportunity to prove that he can do it for Kaizer Chiefs.
