Orlando Pirates could welcome the return of Thalente Mbatha ahead of their highly anticipated MTN8 clash against Mamelodi Sundowns next month.
The 26-year-old midfielder has been sidelined since August after picking up a knee injury, forcing him to miss the majority of the Buccaneers‘ matches at the start of the 2026/27 season.
Despite Mbatha’s absence, Pirates have continued to pick up positive results, winning the majority of their matches without the influential midfielder.
However, the club received a major boost last week when it confirmed that Mbatha and fellow key player Evidence Makgopa had returned to full-team training as they continue their respective recoveries.

The duo could be in contention for Pirates’ MTN8 final against Sundowns on 10 October at Moses Mabhida Stadium, provided they regain full match fitness in time.
“After missing the opening stages of the 2026/27 season, Bafana Bafana internationals Evidence Makgopa and Thalente Mbatha have returned to full-team training following their recovery from their respective injuries,” Pirates said in a statement.
“Mbatha has been sidelined with a knee injury since 10 August 2026, while Makgopa has been receiving treatment for patellar tendinitis since 5 August 2026.
“Both players have also featured in friendly matches as they continue working towards regaining full match fitness.”
Mbatha’s potential return would be a significant boost for Pirates, particularly given his importance to the midfield.
Since last season, the Buccaneers have reportedly never lost a match in which Mbatha has started, highlighting the impact he has had since establishing himself as a key member of the team.
His energy, ball-winning ability and aggressive tackling provide balance in the middle of the park, while his work rate allows Pirates to maintain intensity both in and out of possession.
With a major final against Sundowns approaching, the Buccaneers will be hoping Mbatha can complete his recovery and be ready to play a role in their pursuit of the MTN8 trophy.
Pirates will need both Mbatha and Makgopa on the bench if they are to overcome Sundowns in the final.
