As the Easter weekend approaches, the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Department has announced an increased deployment of officers to ensure road safety during the anticipated surge in holiday travel.
The department’s initiative, known as Operation Exodus, offers free vehicle safety checks for long-distance public transport operators. These checks focus on critical safety features such as brakes, lights, exhaust systems, and tyres. Additionally, vehicle checkpoints will be established around public transport interchanges to assess both driver and vehicle fitness.
Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku has urged motorists to take advantage of these free safety checks, emphasizing that the initiative is a corrective measure aimed at preventing accidents. He highlighted the importance of ensuring vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long journeys, especially on major routes like the N1, N2, and N7, which are expected to experience high traffic volumes during the holiday period.
The City of Cape Town’s proactive measures aim to reduce road fatalities and enhance safety for all road users during the Easter weekend.
