EFF Condemns Trump’s “Disingenuous” South Africa Claims Amid G20 Summit Row

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have sharply criticized US President Donald Trump for citing disputed claims about South Africa’s domestic policies as justification for his potential absence from the upcoming G20 summit.

Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Saturday, voicing reluctance to attend the international gathering. He referenced controversial allegations of genocide against South Africa’s white minority and concerns over land confiscation, claims that have been widely disputed and debunked.

The EFF dismissed Trump’s statements as insincere, asserting that the real reason behind his possible withdrawal likely stems from heightened trade tensions between the United States and China.

Recent weeks have seen escalating economic conflict, with China imposing a 125% retaliatory tariff on American goods, directly responding to a 145% tariff hike from Washington on Chinese imports. China warned that these measures would severely limit US market access.

Trump’s recent announcement of substantial new tariffs—the most extensive of his administration—was intended to be implemented this week but has now been delayed by 90 days for most countries, except China.

EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo stated the party welcomes the possibility of Trump skipping the G20 summit, noting, “His non-attendance would offer leading global nations an opportunity to formulate an economic recovery plan independent of the US dollar. Clearly, Trump fears facing international backlash following his damaging tariff strategy.”

Thambo further advised Trump to focus on addressing allegations surrounding the manipulation of the US stock market, rather than diverting attention by targeting South Africa.
