A GoFundMe dedicated to raising funds to former Springbok Serric Hougaard has hit a standstill.
The crowdfunding campaign was created after the retired rugby player appealed to the public for assistance, after cryptically claiming that he was in “big trouble”.
The 43-year-old – once known as the Liefling van Loftus – hung up his boots in 2015 after a series of serious head injuries. He has since faced multiple health setbacks.

At the time of publishing, the GoFundMe campaign set up in Derick Hougaard’s name has raised AUD $2 280, or around R26 000.
Its target has been set at AUD 28 000, roughly R320 000.
The campaign was set by Springbok fan Lizelle Gers, who lives in Australia.
Its aim is to cover “rent, food and monthly bills”.

Under his Facebook post are comments that read: “Have you ever thought about trying to work?” and “This is pathetic”.
