Update: Big Sundowns and Bafana star won’t play football until 2027

The Sundowns right-back suffered an Achilles rupture against Marumo Gallants. His return now expected around February or March 2027.

KHULISO MUDAU SUFFERS SERIOUS INJURY

Mudau was forced off during the first half of Sundowns’ 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday. The injury occurred without contact, with the defender eventually stretchered off in the 38th minute and replaced by Zuko Mdunyelwa.

“Mamelodi Sundowns right-back Khuliso Mudau is out for six months after an Achilles injury,” Unplayable confirmed.

The initial concern has now been confirmed as a serious Achilles injury. Miguel Cardoso revealed that Mudau will be sidelined for up to six months after suffering the rupture.

Mudau is also expected to undergo surgery as part of his recovery process. His lengthy absence will come as a major setback for the Brazilians, particularly with the defender established as one of the team’s key players.

The injury is another difficult moment for Mudau, who has been an important figure for both club and country in recent seasons.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS AND BAFANA HIT

The setback is also a major blow for Bafana Bafana ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

South Africa are scheduled to begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign in September. They will face Guinea before travelling to Eritrea for their second qualifier.

Mudau’s absence leaves the national team without one of its most experienced options at right-back. The next Bafana coach will now have to find a suitable replacement while the Sundowns star begins his rehabilitation.

For Sundowns, the focus will be on managing Mudau’s absence while maintaining their challenge in the Betway Premiership and other competitions.

The latest update confirms the seriousness of the injury and gives a clearer indication of when fans can expect to see the Bafana Bafana and Sundowns star back on the pitch.

Polokwane City star Thabaang Matuludi was his reverse at the FIFA World Cup. Reports have began to speculate Sundowns could also make a move. Matuludi is yet to play for Rise and Shine this season as part of a rumoured suggestion he is forcing a move to a bigger club.
