Born in Stellenbosch on November 24, 1996, van Rooyen started his football journey alongside cousin and fellow professional Ashley Du Preez.
The pair joined Stellenbosch FC as teenagers, with Van Rooyen making his senior debut in 2016 at 19 against Mthatha Bucks in the National First Division.
He became a key figure as Stellenbosch FC earned promotion to the Premiership in 2019 and eventually left as the club’s all-time appearance record holder, with over 160 appearances.
His time at the club ended with silverware, after he co-captained Stellenbosch FC to the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup.
