October 2026 SASSA Grant top-ups are still to be decided for millions of ‘core’ social-welfare beneficiaries.
However, in typical government fashion, the usual date of confirmation – the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) – falls after next months’ disbursement dates.
This is not the first time the National Treasury and agency have had their lines crossed over grant increases.
Last year, in the wake of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s failed attempt to increase VAT, above inflation SASSA Grant increases were pushed through.
However, three consecutive budgets were rejected by mid-year, at which time reversing April increases retroactively was impossible.
OCTOBER 2026 SASSA GRANT TOP-UPS
As a result, it’s like the South African Social Security Agency has been paying the price ever since.
The Treasury’s 2026 Budget seemed to settle the discussion back in February.
From 1 April 2026, Older Person, Disability and Care Dependency all increased to R2 400. While War Veterans and over 75s went up to R2 420.
Likewise, Child Support climbed R20 to R580. And that’s where they’ve sat with no official confirmation on October 2026 SASSA Grant top-ups since …
Meanwhile, this is a genuine shift from how 2024 and 2025 worked.
For two years running, several ‘core’ grants got a smaller top-up in October.
Granted, it was only R10, but every cent counts for recipients struggling to make ends meet each month. Many of the country’s elderly have been marching to parliament demanding R5 000 per month state pensions …
AT LEAST ONE FOR OCTOBER 2026 SASSA GRANT TOP-UPS
However, there is some sliver of hope.
That is the one exception we could find in the Treasury’s Budget Review document.
It says quite clearly that SASSA Foster Care is scheduled for a R10 bump from R1 290 to R1 300 in October 2026. And while that only applies to a few thousand court-appointed Childcare beneficiaries it does suggest the agency isn’t opposed to top-ups before the end of the year.
Civil society groups believe the absence of October 2026 SASSA Grant top-ups for core beneficiaries has to do with the R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD).
Back in his February Budget briefing, Minister Godongwana said the ‘expanded’ SRD grant would finally be revealed in the MTBPS.
In its current form, the ‘temporary’ grant lives on until 31 March 2027. At which point it’s understood that the next phase will kick-in, with government committing an extra R36.4 billion to the pot.

Of course, nothing here is final until Finance Minister Godongwana reveals more in Wednesday 21 October’s MTBPS.
Likewise, the agency might still conceivably announce October 2026 SASSA Grant top-ups in the intervening weeks. At which point we will update you.
But what do you think? Do you think we’re likely to see increases next month? Does it even matter when the numbers are so low? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below …
